THE FIRST UNOFFICIAL MISFIT*

In 2017, founder Abby Prager graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a passion for food that led her through a variety of kitchens across Providence and later New York. Each kitchen came with intense pressure to perform precisely and produce perfection. Then, when the  pandemic hit, the elegant cocktail bar where Abby worked transformed into a takeout spot for “cocktails and scoops to go.” Suddenly, Abby found herself with a whiteboard full of wild, ice cream flavor ideas just waiting to be brought to life.

That summer, she bought her first ice cream maker and started crafting pints for neighbors, family, and friends. For the first time, the kitchen wasn’t about perfection—it was about pushing boundaries, experimenting, and embracing the thrill of creating freely. To match these bold, unconventional flavors, Abby reached out to local artists to design unique artwork for the pint containers, transforming what would be plain cardboard into one-of-a-kind canvases.

Today, Unofficial Ice Cream Company has become a community for fellow misfits to discover ice cream (and art) that, like them, is free to be whatever it wants to be.

an ice cream flavor or person who stands out because of their unique personality, unconventional views, or distinct way of doing things— they can be misunderstood or feel out of place because they don’t conform to the expectations or behaviors of the majority— but they are a source of creativity, innovation, and authenticity.
